What Is Blood Pressure in Pakistan?
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart beats. It's a critical sign of how well your heart and circulatory system are working. Blood pressure is measured as two numbers:
- Systolic pressure (top number): Pressure as the heart beats.
- Diastolic pressure (bottom number): Pressure when the heart is resting between beats.
For instance, a normal reading is 120/80 mmHg. High or low blood pressure may result in health problems.
Types of Blood Pressure Conditions:
- Normal Blood Pressure: Less than 120/80 mmHg.
- Elevated Blood Pressure (Prehypertension): Systolic 120–129 and diastolic less than 80 mmHg.
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):
- Stage 1: 130–139/80–89 mmHg
- Stage 2: 140+/90+ mmHg
- Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure):
Typically less than 90/60 mmHg, causing dizziness or fainting.
Symptoms of Blood Pressure Problems in Pakistan:
High blood pressure (hypertension) is present in most people with no symptoms, which has earned it the nickname "silent killer." When blood pressure is very high or low, some symptoms are:
- Headache
- Dizziness or fainting
- Blurred vision
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Fatigue or confusion
- Irregular heartbeat
Low blood pressure causes fainting, cold skin, or shock in severe cases.
Causes and Risk Factors in Pakistan:
A number of factors influence blood pressure, including:
- Age – Risk increases with age
- Family history – Genetic predisposition
- Obesity and physical inactivity
- Excessive salt intake, smoking, or alcohol use
- Stress and lack of sleep
- Chronic diseases – Such as diabetes or kidney disease
- Medication – Certain medicines can increase or decrease blood pressure
Diagnosis of Blood Pressure Issues:
BP is taken using a sphygmomanometer (BP cuff). For precise diagnosis:
- Multiple measurements over time are taken into account
- Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can be recommended
- Lab work or ECG can be performed to evaluate associated complications
Treatment and Management in Pakistan:
- Lifestyle Modifications: Decrease salt consumption
- Follow a heart-healthy diet (e.g., DASH diet)
- Exercise on a regular basis
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol
- Reduce stress through relaxation methods
Medications:
- Diuretics
- ACE inhibitors
- Beta-blockers
- Calcium channel blockers
For Low BP:
- Increase fluid and salt consumption (as recommended)
- Wear compression stockings
- Medications in some situations
