What is Amniocentesis in Pakistan?
Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic procedure performed during pregnancy to collect a small amount of amniotic fluid—the protective liquid surrounding the fetus in the womb. This fluid contains fetal cells and various proteins that can provide valuable information about the baby's health as well as genetic makeup, and development. The test is most commonly done between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy and is typically offered to women with higher-risk pregnancies.
Amniocentesis is not a routine test for every pregnancy. It is usually recommended when there is a medical reason to assess genetic conditions, chromosomal abnormalities, or fetal infections.
Why is Amniocentesis done in Pakistan?
Amniocentesis is primarily used for diagnostic purposes as well as helping detect certain genetic or chromosomal conditions in the fetus. It may also be used to assess the severity of conditions or monitor fetal lung development later in pregnancy.
Common indications include:
- Screening for chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome or Trisomy 18
- Detecting inherited genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia
- Evaluating neural tube defects like spina bifida
- Determining fetal infections
- Checking fetal lung maturity (usually in late pregnancy)
- Diagnosing Rh incompatibility complications
What to expect during the procedure in Pakistan?
Amniocentesis in Pakistan is usually performed under ultrasound guidance. A thin, hollow needle is inserted through the abdominal wall into the uterus to draw a small sample of amniotic fluid. The procedure typically takes about 20–30 minutes, and most women experience only mild discomfort or cramping.
After the sample is collected, it is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Results for genetic testing may take 1–2 weeks, while other tests can return sooner.
Risks and Considerations
- While amniocentesis is considered a safe and reliable test, it does carry some risks, though they are rare.
- Possible risks include:
- Miscarriage (less than 1% risk)
- Cramping or vaginal spotting
- Infection
- Leakage of amniotic fluid
- Injury to the baby (very rare with ultrasound guidance)
- Your doctor will discuss these risks thoroughly and help you decide if the procedure is appropriate based on your specific situation.
Is it necessary for every pregnancy?
No, amniocentesis is not recommended for every pregnant woman. It is usually offered when:
- You are 35 years or older
- You had abnormal results on a prenatal screening test
- You have a family history of genetic disorders
- You previously had a child with a congenital disability
- There is concern about fetal infection or Rh disease
- The decision is highly personal and should be made after consulting a healthcare professional and, if needed, a genetic counsellor.
